The use of Environmental DNA (eDNA) for the purpose of investigating aquatic communities - an innovative method used in the evaluation of the dynamics of prokaryotic and eukaryotic communities, with applications in the scientific research field.
The study of microplastics in aquatic systems – in sediments, water and organisms.
The use of new innovative geological and geophysical equipment and techniques for the detailed analysis of the sedimentological, geochemical and biogeochemical processes that take place in the Danube-Delta-Black Sea macrosystem.

Events for communication and popularization of science
This activity covers the organization of a International Conference: Changes in Ancient and Current Aquatic Systems in the context of Climate Change. A conference will be organized by INCD GeoEcoMar, with the participation of an important number of guests from the country and abroad. The funds allocated from this project will be used for the organization of the conference, the program drafting, the volume of abstracts, as well as for the publication of the volume of the conference.

This activity is based on the initiation and continuation of the institutes new and traditional fields, as well on the internships carried out by young researchers, participation in proposed national and international conferences, in the main research directions: geology, geophysics, geochemistry and fluvial, deltaic and marine biology.

INNOVATION – PATENTS APPLIED AT THE NATIONAL LEVEL
The innovative activity in the institute will focus in the coming years on proposals for devices, equipment and methods, which will be useful for the research fields of the institute: seismo-acoustics, magnetometry, gravimetry, mineralogy, paleontology, sedimentology, analysis of pollutants in the coastal area, fluvial and marine deltaic areas, as well as geoarchaeology.

III.1.1 Innovation Activity
Regarding the Development and Improvement of the Internal/Managerial System - SCIM, for this phase were implemented a series of documented information meant to support the institution's research-development-innovation activity. Moreover, the Innovation Management System (SMIn) was implemented and certified for the entire institution, complementary to the already implemented management systems. The need to apply SMIn was explained from the economic and social transformation perspective, determined by the technical progress, the development of information technology and, implicitly, by the competition increase.
III.1.2 Innovation – REQUIRED PATENTS AT NATIONAL LEVEL
Result indicator: 2 patent requests and 4 copyright protection. The patents/copyrights protection duration is 20 years, considering the extent of these rights in this project's framework.

III.1.2 Research support activity
Preparation stages and Mobilities
This activity included national and international scientific events participations, with the main research topics of the institution. Based on this activity, the international visibility of the institution increased. The utilized human resources comprised both senior and young researchers of the institution.
Between 12-16th of June 2023, during the “36th IAS Meeting of Sedimentology” event organized in Dubrovnik, Croatia, 8 GeoEcoMar researchers presented a varied number of papers with the institution's main research-development-innovation topics.
Furthermore, research results were exhibited and discussed (as presentations and posters), with the abstracts submitted for publishing (including acknowledgements for the financial support of this project) in the INQUA “XXI International Union for Quaternary Research” (Roma, Italia) Congress, a Mondial event which is organized once at 4 years.
III.1.4. Research supporting activity – Communication event and science promotion
A summer school with international and national participation was organized in Jurilovca, in may 2023 presenting different aspects related to the evolution of new and old aquatic systems.
Students, master students and PhD students were familiarized at this event with geosciences domain, in general and, in particular, with the macro-geo-system of river-delta-sea evolution. Young employees from research institutions and universities from Romania and Republic of Moldavia participated at this event. Senior researchers (INCD GeoEcoMar, Bucharest University and INCD Grigore Antipa – Constanța) presented research results and concepts regarding old and new marine and fluvial basins (Danube and its tributaries, Danube Delta and Black Sea).
Activity IV.1. Organizing a conference with international and national participation
This activity consists of organizing an international conference having the main topic the aquatic environment characteristics evaluation, utilizing geological, geophysical, biological and geochemical methods. In this project’s framework, INCD GeoEcoMar organized the International Symposium “Ancient and Present River-Delta-Sea Systems modifications under impacts of Human Interventions and Climate Change”. This scientific event was coincident with celebrating 30 years of activity of The National Research-Development for Geology and Marine Geo-ecology – GeoEcoMar institution. The conference was organized between 17th-18th of October, 2023, in the “I. Heliade Rădulescu” Aula of the Romanian Academy Library, where over 150 Romanian and foreign researchers participated (France, Great Britain, Turkey, Ukraine, Republic of Moldavia, Italy and Greece).

Activity IV.1.2 Program supported mobilities
This activity included national and international scientific events participations, with the main research topics of the institution. Based on this activity, the international visibility of the institution increased. Thus, between 14th – 15th of September 2023, 8 GeoEcoMar researchers, members of this project, presented a varied number of scientific papers with the institution's main research-development-innovation topics during the “The 14th Romanian Symposium of Palaeontology” from Bucharest University. With the same objectives, several scientific papers were also presented during “The XIth International ProGEO Symposium” (12th-15th October, Charnwood Forest, Loughborough, Great Britain) a conference organized once at 2 years. Hence, the presentations (by Dr. CS1 Antoneta Seghedi, Dr. CS1 Andrei Briceag și Dr. CS3 Eliza Anton) were focused on the Romanian geoparks monitoring (Haţeg UNESCO Global Geopark, Buzău Land UNESCO Global Geopark, Cimmerian Dobrogea Aspiring Geopark, Carpaterra Aspiring Geopark and Oltenia under the Mountain Aspiring Geopark). Several researchers from Constanta also participated at the Black Sea Days Conference, where they presented marine geo-ecology and coastal research results.
Activity IV.1.3 CDI Infrastructure investments of European/regional interest, located in Romania
A scanning electron microscope (SEM) was purchased as a tool for biology, micropaleontology, chemistry and mineralogy for the study of marine, river and delta systems and, in general, for the study of geology, including marine geology and geo-ecology. The scanning electron microscope has a 50000x magnification. This research equipment is the most utilized in the institutions and universities laboratories and has the clearest and largest depth of field, facilitating the image procurement of the entire analysed space.
Activity V.1. Research support activity
INTERNSHIPS, MOBILITIES, ACCESS TO PUBLICATIONS AND DATABASES
As part of this activity, according to the project proposal, archives, libraries, publications, databases and other sources for information were accessed. They were available through existing platforms (for the international ones, ANELIS+, Elsevier, Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar), and also for the internal ones, being done on existing platforms on the institutional intranet, including the Database of the institute and the Scientific Library NIRD GeoEcoMar.
Also, as part of this activity, participations were made at national and international scientific events, with topics addressed in the institute's main research directions. Based on this activity, the international visibility of the institute has increased. The human resource was composed of both the institute's senior researchers and young researchers.
The results obtained from them were presented at the international conference EGU24 (European Geoscience Union) organized in Vienna in Austria from April 15-19, 2024, which was attended by more than 20,000 researchers from all over the world.
Activity V.1.1 Innovation activity
Events for the communication and popularization of science supported by the program
Organization of the Summer School in the Buzăului Geopark
This event was attended by students, masters and PhD students, in order to be initiated in geosciences, and in aspects related to the macro-geo-evolution of the river-delta-sea system in particular. Senior researchers (from NIRD GeoEcoMar) presented the achievements and concepts regarding the geological heritage of the Buzău Country Geopark, as well as geoconservation principles, as well as sediment dynamics in the accumulation processes of gas hydrates on the Romanian shelf of the Black Sea.
The AMBIACVA summer school "Highlighting environmental and biotic changes in old and current aquatic systems" took place in the UNESCO International Geopark Buzău County, between 14-18 May 2024, in Berca. During three days of activities, both field campaigns were carried out in various points of interest in the Buzău Geopark, for the presentation of geological and geo-ecological aspects, and a session of scientific communications organized within the school.
Activity V.1.2. Research support activity
This activity consisted in the computerization of the INCD GeoEcoMar library, the conceptual and quantitative updating of the data bank with the data from the analysis of the river-delta-sea system, the protection of 4 copyrights for patents.
Informatization of the INCD GeoEcoMar library
The NIRD GeoEcoMar Library is a specialized private law library. It operates in a dedicated space, containing book titles, journals, serials, geological and geophysical maps, abstracts of doctoral theses, abstracts of scientific papers and other scientific works.
From an information material point of view, in the traditional system, the library makes available for to readers a number of over 7200 volumes, publications, books, geological, geophysical, topographical maps, as well as periodicals on print media in Romanian, English, French, Italian, Russian, Bulgarian, Czech and German, as well as the collection of the journal Geo-Eco-Marina which is an annually scientific journal published since 1996, in which researchers in the field of marine sciences, especially geologists and geophysicists, from any country in the world are invited to submit.
